Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the characteristic properties of selected activated carbon (AC) brands utilized for gold (Au) adsorption at Goldfields Ghana Limited (GGL) during carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes. The objective was to evaluate the performance of various AC brands and recommend effective options for gold recovery amid variability in low-grade ore mineralogy. Utilizing a comparative methodology, the study analyzed carbon attrition, particle size distribution (PSD), relative activity, and Au loading capacity of multiple AC brands: Norit Granular (NG), Norit Extruded (NE), Acarb (AB), Hercoarb (HB), Cerrotrap (CB), Chemquest (CQ), and PicaGold (PG). Results indicated that all brands remained within GGL's tolerable attrition limit of 8%. Particle size analyses revealed that more than 70% of particles (excluding NE) were larger than 2.00 mm, with the highest relative activities recorded for NG (136.51%), NE (91.04%), and others, characterized in the size range of 2.00 ±1.18 mm. Au loading capacity demonstrated a hierarchy favoring NG, PG, and CQ, with all brands’ performance influenced by pulp-particle interactions. This evaluation provides critical insights for optimizing Au recovery in mining operations.
