This study investigates the percolation leaching of bornite ore using acidified ferric sulphate solutions, focusing on the kinetics of copper dissolution. The objective was to explore how factors affect copper extraction rates during leaching while determining whether results from pure synthetic bornite could predict behavior in natural ore. Methodologically, columns were packed with crushed bornite ore obtained from Harvey Hill Mines, Quebec, and subjected to leaching experiments over several weeks. The findings revealed that up to 80 percent of the copper could be efficiently leached quickly, despite the conversion of bornite to chalcopyrite which limits rapid extraction. The dissolution occurred in two distinct stages, with the initial stage being rapid and linear, controlled primarily by the oxidant supply rate, while the second stage was slow, non-linear, and temperature-dependent. Notably, initial leaching rates remained insensitive to variations in the concentration of the ferrous sulphate byproduct and sulphuric acid concentration. These results contribute valuable insights into optimizing leaching processes for copper recovery from bornite ores.
