This technical report addresses the challenges faced during the heat treatment of PBF acoustic filter Unit No. 1, which experienced cracking during initial attempts. The objective was to investigate the effects of prior thermal cycling, solution anneal temperature, and cooling rate from solution anneals on the mechanical properties of Inconel 718 used in these filters. A comprehensive experimental methodology was applied, monitoring stress rupture properties at 1400°F and room temperature age-hardened characteristics to prevent further cracking and ensure compliance with design requirements. The study revealed that adjusting thermal cycling parameters could significantly influence the integrity of the repaired filters. Results indicated that slow furnace cooling and optimal annealing temperatures improved the ductility and strength of the materials, thus enhancing the performance of the acoustic filters under operational conditions. This report provides valuable insights and guidelines for engineers in the aerospace and nuclear industries regarding the processing and treatment of Inconel 718 components.
