Abstract

Language:

Phenomena between the electrode tip, the arc attachment zone (AAZ), and the bath below the AAZ—taken together as arc attachment volume (AAV)—have a significant impact on the performance and efficiency of DC arc furnaces. This paper investigates the phenomena in the AAV in detail, specifically in the context of a Kazakh DC ferrochrome furnace. The analysis is conducted by examining significant variables including temperature, carbon in feed, and slag from the slag bath. The results indicate that alloy can act as a reductant for fume species such as Mg(g), SiO(g), Cr(g), and Fe(g) from slag containing MgO, SiO2, FeOx, and Cr2O3. The findings suggest that the fuming reactions and reoxidation of metal vapor significantly affect furnace operations, particularly if AAV temperature is not properly managed. Additionally, the unique exergy analysis reveals that effectively harnessing the chemical potential energy of fumes can reduce energy consumption within the furnace. This investigation provides insights not only applicable to ferrochrome smelting but also to other open-bath processes involving fumable oxides, thereby highlighting the potential to enhance operational efficiencies and the green metallurgical impact of these applications.
