This study investigates various text extraction techniques applied to academic documents, focusing on the effectiveness and accuracy of these methods in capturing meaningful content. The primary objective was to evaluate how different algorithms perform under varying conditions such as document formatting and text complexity. We employed a systematic approach where we tested several extraction tools on a range of academic documents, analyzing the extracted data for completeness and correctness. Our methodology included both qualitative assessments by domain experts and quantitative metrics including precision and recall to gauge accuracy. The results indicate significant discrepancies in performance across different extraction tools, with some achieving up to 95% accuracy in well-structured documents while others struggled with cluttered or poorly formatted texts. Furthermore, we identified specific best practices that can enhance text extraction performance, including pre-processing steps and tool selection based on document type. The insights gained from this analysis can inform researchers and developers in selecting appropriate text extraction techniques for their specific needs. This study contributes to advancing automated document processing systems, especially in academic settings, by highlighting effective strategies for improving text extraction quality.
