This study investigates the effectiveness of a simultaneous aerobic and anaerobic (SAA) bio-reactor system in treating landfill leachate generated from Zhaitan San Landfill in Guangzhou, China. The primary objective was to evaluate the removal of organic pollutants and ammonia from the leachate. Using gas chromatogram–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis, the influent concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) were monitored, ranging from 1000–3030 mg L⁻¹ and 80–230 mg L⁻¹ respectively. The results indicated that the SAA bio-reactor significantly reduced the average effluent concentrations of COD and NH4-N to 131 and 7 mg L⁻¹, respectively, which meets the Chinese second grade effluent standard. Overall, 87 organic pollutants were identified in the leachate, with 31 completely removed by the system, while 25 others experienced a reduction greater than 80%. These findings suggest that the SAA bio-reactor system is a promising alternative for the efficient bioremediation of landfill leachate contaminants.
