Abstract

Language:

The study investigates the electrodeposition of Zn-Ni alloys from an alkaline bath using triethanolamine as a complexing agent for Ni2+ ions. Various brightening agents including polyethylene glycol (PEG), coumarin, piperonal, and vanillin were tested to evaluate their effects on the codeposition process and the corrosion resistance of the resulting coatings. The findings indicate that the electrodeposition occurs via an anomalous type mechanism. Additionally, Tafel polarization measurements were performed to assess the influence of plating bath conditions on the corrosion resistance of the coatings. The results demonstrated that the brightening agents positively affected the quality of the deposits as well as their resistance to corrosion. Overall, the incorporation of these additives improved the performance of Zn-Ni alloy coatings, which are increasingly replacing cadmium coatings in the automotive industry due to their superior protective properties and corrosion resistance.
