In this editorial, we reflect on the historical progress and future potential of solar energy applications, originating from pioneering work in the 19th century by Augustin Mouchot, who developed the first solar furnaces capable of powering steam engines. The objective is to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, which marks a significant milestone in the advancement of solar energy technologies. This editorial employs a historical review methodology, illustrating the evolution of solar energy systems from initial industrial applications in Europe to contemporary uses in buildings and urban settings. The results indicate a continuous progression in solar technology, with an emphasis on sustainability and the dissemination of renewable energy in urban environments, aiming to counterbalance the adverse effects of fossil fuel combustion. The editorial also highlights the collaboration between prestigious institutions, including Harvard and MIT, during the CISBAT 2003 International Conference on Solar Energy Use in Buildings, further demonstrating the communal effort towards improving urban sustainability through renewable technologies.
