Abstract

Language:

Hydrometallurgy is a modern technique for the extraction of metals from ores or concentrates via wet chemical methods, including water as a solvent. This document serves as an introduction to the fundamental concepts of hydrometallurgy, outlining its four core processes: pretreatment, leaching, purification, and recovery. The pretreatment phase involves preparing the ore for leaching through crushing, grinding, and separation methods. Leaching subsequently extracts the desired minerals into solution, employing optimal conditions and reagents to facilitate this chemical reaction. Following leaching, the purification process aims to separate the desired mineral from impurities using methods such as precipitation or ion exchange. Finally, the recovery phase involves processes like distillation or electrowinning to obtain the metal or compound from the solution. This systematic approach to extracting metals highlights hydrometallurgy's efficiency and economic advantage over traditional pyrometallurgy. By synthesizing both theoretical and practical techniques, this document aims to equip students and practitioners with essential knowledge in the field of extractive metallurgy.
