Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals locked in a micacious solid matrix or associated with other minerals. Recovery of copper from CROs via acid-leaching has been deemed economically unfeasible due to the presence of gangue-acid-consuming minerals. This study highlights the significant presence of carbonates and oxides in CRO material, revealing that only a portion of copper is recoverable through non-oxidative acid-leaching processes. Batch leach tests on CRO solids were conducted to determine gangue acid consumption under varying feed pH values and evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese, and iron. Following this, continuous leach tests utilizing optimum conditions from batch tests were performed on CRO solids to assess recovery efficacy. The findings suggest that sustainable copper recovery is achievable by optimizing leaching conditions to minimize gangue acid consumption and reduce manganese and iron concentrations in the leachate. Ultimately, this research presents a pathway to improve copper recovery from CROs while addressing economic feasibility concerns.
