This review discusses the evolution and current state of X-ray generation technologies, particularly focusing on carbon nanotube-based field emission sources. The objective is to evaluate advances that address the limitations of conventional thermionic electron sources, which have remained largely unchanged over the past century. Through a thorough literature review, we analyze various fabrication methods and their functional advantages, highlighting the capability to create smaller electron beam assemblies, shaped cathodes, and improved temporal stability. The methodologies employed include the exploration of innovative fabrication techniques such as screen printing, electrophoresis, vacuum filtration, and chemical vapor deposition. The results suggest that the use of carbon nanotubes in electron sources not only overcomes the physical size and temporal response constraints but also opens avenues for significant technological breakthroughs in applications ranging from medical imaging to security inspections. The review concludes with insights on the commercial progress achieved towards implementing these advanced X-ray sources, indicating their potential impact on future X-ray applications.
