The performance of a 12 t, delta shaped, four-strand, billet casting tundish was investigated using a full scale (1 : 1) isothermal model with water as the simulating fluid for steel. The study aimed to enhance steel quality by analyzing various flow modifying arrangements within the tundish. Three different modelling experiments were executed, measuring quantifiable performance indicators such as the number of slag beads, residual ratio of inclusions (RRI %), mean residence time, and dead volume fraction. These parameters served as critical performance indicators. Results indicated that the different flow modifying dam arrangements substantially alter the flow pattern within the tundish compared to a bare tundish. Based on the analysis of performance indicators, the best flow arrangement was identified. The assumption that similar conclusions can be obtained from both transient physical modelling experiments and steady state mathematical predictions was confirmed, demonstrating the robustness of the findings. The study presents a compelling argument for reevaluating flow dynamics in continuous casting tundishes to achieve cleaner steel with reduced foreign particle inclusions.
