Abstract

Language:

This study addresses the challenges posed by aluminum-containing phases during the processing of radioactive tank wastes, specifically focusing on the precipitation and deposition of these species which can lead to operational disruptions. The primary objective is to understand the factors influencing the formation and transformation of aluminosilicate phases, particularly in regards to minimizing clogging and scale formation in processing equipment. Methodologically, low angle x-ray scattering studies are employed to investigate the early stages of reaction and formation of clusters, along with 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry conducted by collaborators to elucidate the structure of aluminum-containing species in solution. Additionally, the research explores the stabilization of these complexes through the use of polyelectrolytes like poly(acrylic acid). The anticipated results aim to provide insights into thermodynamic stability and effective processing strategies that may prevent deposition issues, ultimately improving the management and efficiency of waste processing operations.
