The production of ethylbenzene through distillation is a crucial process in the field of chemical engineering due to its industrial significance in the manufacturing of styrene. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the materials and design involved in the distillation column used for the production of ethylbenzene. The methodology includes a thorough review of process backgrounds, a material balance at the distillation column, and a detailed chemical design incorporating sizing calculations, relative volatility, minimum stages calculations using Fenske’s equation, and reflux ratios. The results demonstrate effective designs for distillation columns, highlighting the importance of operating reflux ratios and the number of stages required for optimal ethylbenzene production. This work serves as a foundation for future developments in the synthesis and optimization of ethylbenzene production processes, contributing to more efficient and environmentally friendly chemical manufacturing practices.
