Chalcopyrite ore was roasted at 200, 550 and 800ºC in reducing (5%H2/95%Ar) and inert (N2) atmospheres to examine the effects of the thermal pre-treatment on the phase mineralogy and the dissolution behavior in sulfuric acid media. The study aimed to identify the structural and chemical modifications that occur due to the thermal treatment and how these changes impact the leaching efficiency of chalcopyrite in acidic conditions. Samples were subjected to Rietveld analysis and back-scattered electron imaging to determine the mineralogical transformations and dissolution patterns. Results indicated that the varying heating temperatures and atmospheres significantly influenced the dissolution rates, with pre-treated samples demonstrating enhanced leaching performance compared to untreated controls. The findings contribute valuable insights into improving the extractive metallurgy processes involving chalcopyrite, suggesting that it is crucial to optimize thermal treatment parameters to maximize metal recovery from this primary copper ore. This research highlights the importance of understanding the interactions between thermal pre-treatment and subsequent leaching operations.
