Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a well-known non-traditional machining method widely utilized to produce complex geometry on electrically conductive and difficult-to-cut materials. This experimental investigation compared three EDM variants: conventional EDM, dry EDM (DEDM), and near-dry EDM (NdEDM). The study employed the Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array for robust design methodology to optimize the material removal rate (MRR), measuring the influence of four parameters: current, pulse on-time, pulse off-time, and lift setting. Results indicated that NdEDM outperformed the other variants in terms of MRR, with all process parameters significantly impacting the performance across the EDM variants. Notably, current emerged as the most significant factor influencing MRR. This research underscores the comparative advantages of NdEDM in enhancing machining efficiency and effectiveness.
