Abstract

Language:

Nickel laterite ores account for over 60% of the global nickel supply and are formed from the intensive weathering of serpentinites in humid tropical climates. This study explores the mineralogical characteristics and formation processes of these deposits, focusing on their complex development influenced by lithology, tectonics, climate, and geomorphology. The methodology includes analyzing geological data and production histories of nickel laterites globally. The results indicate that the most lucrative deposits, containing over 3 wt% nickel, are typically formed when oxide-rich regoliths undergo uplift, allowing nickel to leach downward and concentrate in newly formed silicates in the saprolite layer. Factors such as varying climatic and topographic conditions have contributed to the evolution of these deposits, demonstrating a multi-phase development that mirrors changes in the environmental context. An increase in global nickel demand and advances in processing technologies have led to a renewed focus on lateritic ores, which now represent a significant portion of the world's nickel resources. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the geological and environmental conditions that govern the formation and distribution of nickel laterite deposits.
