Domestic waste is a major source of environmental pollution in rapidly urbanizing areas such as Phan Dinh Phung ward in Thai Nguyen City. This study evaluates the current status of domestic solid waste classification at source in the ward, which has piloted waste separation since 2018 under the city’s 2017–2020 project. Using document analysis, sociological surveys of 5,318 households and 450 business households, and Excel-based data processing, the research assesses awareness, practices, and compliance related to waste sorting, container use, and collection schedules. Results show that 89% of households and 91% of business households know how to classify waste, and 87–88% know the correct color codes for waste bags. However, only 57% of households and 56% of business households actually classify waste, and correct classification is achieved by just 45% of households and 37% of business households. The use of distributed sorting tools and compliance with proper disposal times and locations remain low. The study recommends synchronized improvements from source separation through collection, transport, and treatment, alongside stronger and more frequent public communication, to enhance the effectiveness of domestic waste management in the ward.
