A non-stationary method for tunneling description of non-relativistic particles and photons through a barrier is presented, based on the consideration of multiple internal reflections of wave packets in relation to barrier boundaries. The method is described in detail and is validated for the case of one-dimensional tunneling of a particle through a rectangular barrier. For cases involving tunneling of a particle through a spherically symmetric barrier and of a photon through a one-dimensional barrier, the amplitudes of transmitted and reflected wave packets with respect to the barrier, as well as the times of tunneling and reflection are determined using this method. Additionally, the implications of Hartman’s and Fletcher’s effects are analyzed.
