Characterization of Archaeological Ceramic from Lagartero, Chiapas, Mexico, by Nuclear and Conventional Techniques

Ceramic potshards collected at the archaeological Mayan site of Lagartero, Chiapas, Mexico were analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and data were statistically studied. The ceramics were determined to be of local manufacture and originated from other sites within the Upper Grijalva Basin as well as from the Guatemalan Lowlands and Highlands. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that quartz, feldspars, montmorillonite, and calcite were the main components of the ceramic pastes. Additionally, pigments were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD, identifying hematite, pyrolusite, maghemite, and calcite. This study aims to provide a detailed characterization of the archaeological ceramics and discusses the findings in the broader context of the Mayan region, facilitating a better understanding of cultural exchanges and manufacturing techniques during the period in question.
