Abstract

Language:

On-farm pasture cover is crucial for profitable dairy farm management; however, accurate assessment is often challenging due to farm size and operational demands, especially during the calving season. This study investigates various methods for measuring pasture cover and highlights the constraints of traditional techniques, such as visual assessment and rising plate meters, which require significant time and skilled labor. The Automatic Pasture Reader (APR) represents a recent advancement in pasture measurement technology, utilizing sound technology to facilitate easier and more accurate assessments of pasture height and dry matter availability. Field tests on Australian dairy farms suggest that implementing regular pasture monitoring could lead to substantial cost savings in supplementary feeding, with estimations of $20,000 in savings per year from improved pasture consumption. The findings indicate that while all measurement methods necessitate calibration, the APR technology offers a more efficient alternative, potentially optimizing pasture management and enhancing dairy farm productivity. This research underscores the importance of timely and precise pasture cover assessment in maximizing dairy farm profitability and provides insights into modern technologies that could transform traditional farming practices.
