The durability of metallic and organic coatings is a crucial aspect of coating selection and use, yet diverse definitions and conflicting studies complicate this understanding. This paper aims to standardize durability figures for various coating systems as outlined in the latest version of AS/NZS 2312. It discusses the correlations between these durability figures and international standards regarding different corrosivity environments, particularly focusing on zinc coatings, which are calculated based on corrosion rates. The findings reveal a reasonable correlation between life expectancy figures derived from this methodology and those published in existing literature. Additionally, the paper addresses the complexities associated with paint coatings, which present a wider range of variables including surface preparation, coating type, and thickness, leading to greater uncertainty in durability estimates. Despite the inherent challenges, the study provides a reasonable framework to estimate the durability of multiple paint coating systems, advocating for consistency and accuracy in durability figures within the coatings industry.
