In 1981, Gold Fields implemented the mining industry's inaugural commercial gold electrowinning/replate circuit at Ortiz, which has since operated successfully, influencing a similar project at Mesquite initiated in early 1986. This study outlines the operational details of these circuits that produce gold foil ready for direct shipment to refineries or for melting into bars. The methods employed involve electroplating gold onto stainless steel wool instead of the conventional mild steel wool, allowing for multiple reuses of the same steel wool, clean and quick removal of gold from stainless steel plates, reduced operational costs, and minimized slag production. The Ortiz site, located in central New Mexico, produces approximately 1250 kg of gold per year from its heap leach operation. The Mesquite operation, which began in 1986, uses a specific leaching process with a sodium cyanide solution and a systematic series of carbon columns for gold extraction. The process of stripping gold from the carbon bed and subsequent reactivation in a kiln is also described. The innovative techniques and circuit designs presented exhibit significant advancements in gold recovery, showcasing the efficiency and effectiveness of Gold Fields' methods, which could serve as a model for future operations in the industry.
