Dairy farmers are being requested to mitigate the environmental impacts associated with dairy farming. This study investigates various nitrogen (N) mitigation strategies applied at a farm systems level, utilizing a simulation approach through DairyNZ’s Whole Farm Model (WFM) and APSIM over the 2017/18 season. The objective was to evaluate the effects of these strategies on nitrogen losses and milk solids production in New Zealand dairy systems. A typical Waikato dairy farm was compared to a Pastoral 21 Future Farm and a potential low input future farm, assessing scenarios with differing stocking rates and nitrogen application rates. Results highlighted the efficacy of low protein feeds, adjusted fertiliser N applications, and innovative farming practices, such as utilizing effluent as fertiliser and incorporating dedicated cropping blocks for maize silage production. The findings indicate that these management strategies could lead to a significant reduction in contaminant losses while maintaining or improving farm productivity. This study provides valuable insights for dairy farmers looking to optimize their operations for environmental compliance and sustainability.
