The aim of the present study was to investigate the metal leaching behavior of the hazardous waste of the zinc industry before and after thermal treatment. Samples were subjected to the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and ASTM methods. The results demonstrate that the addition of clinoptilolite, blast furnace slag, and lime to the zinc leach residue effectively reduces the heavy metal content in the effluent, with the bed performing better than clinoptilolite and blast furnace slag. Leaching tests indicated that before thermal treatment, the content of certain elements in the waste exceeded regulatory limits, thus prohibiting its disposal in its current form. Metal releases significantly decreased at higher temperatures of 600°C, 800°C, and reached minimal levels at 1200°C due to the heat-induced formation of a glassy matrix. Specifically, the level of Zn2+ released at 1200°C was recorded at 0.025 mg/L. Therefore, a stabilization or inertization treatment is deemed necessary prior to disposal. The findings suggest that thermal treatment can serve as an acceptable method for the disposal of zinc leach residue.
