Orchids, the second largest family of flowering plants, exhibit remarkable diversity and are widely distributed across the globe, with a specific focus on their conservation and economic potential in light of changing climate conditions. This paper aims to explore the production technology of commercial orchids, emphasizing their significance not only in horticulture and floral trade but also in medicinal applications. A comprehensive review of the Orchidaceae family is presented, highlighting its taxonomical classification, the global threat status of various species as identified by the IUCN Red List, and the ecological niche specific to epiphytic, terrestrial, and lithophytic orchids. Methodologically, the study synthesizes existing literature on orchid species diversity, cultivation practices, and their role in international trade. It is revealed that India is home to a significant number of orchid species and genera, wherein major players like Cattleya, Laelia, and Cymbidium contribute to the cut flower market. The findings shed light on India's competitive position in the global flower market, alongside discussions on sustainable methods of cultivation and the socio-economic implications of orchid trade. The research emphasizes the urgent need for conservation efforts to enhance the sustainable use of orchid resources while maintaining biodiversity.
