At the end of the XXth century, it was anticipated that the production of pig-iron in blast furnaces would decline due to alternative methods for iron production; however, recent findings indicate that blast furnace technology remains critical in the iron and steel industry due to its low operational costs and high production capacity. This study aims to explore the ongoing relevance of blast furnaces amidst predictions of their obsolescence and to highlight the technological advancements that have extended their operational lifespan. Employing a qualitative analysis of current operational practices, maintenance techniques, and recent innovations in furnace design, this research outlines various strategies that ensure the ongoing efficiency of blast furnaces. Results demonstrate that while challenges such as rising air temperatures and the need for improved fuel injection methods persist, advancements in operational practices and technology enhancements have significantly prolonged the lifespan of these furnaces. Additionally, the research underscores the importance of designing new crucible and ancillary equipment to optimize performance further. Ultimately, the findings reaffirm that with appropriate interventions, blast furnace technology will retain its pivotal role in steel production for years to come.
