The Inexistent Battle at the Field of Bl

This paper examines the historical narrative surrounding the Battle at Kosovo Polje in 1389, proposing that the battle never occurred as traditionally recounted. The objective is to deconstruct the extensive literary and historical accounts propagated by various cultural and political narratives over the centuries, specifically from the late 14th to the 17th century. Through a comprehensive analysis of both Eastern and Western chronicles, the study reveals how these texts, influenced by political motives, have contributed to the mythologization of the battle. Notably, the earliest Ottoman reference, the poem 'Iskender-name' by Ahmedie, and the Persian work 'Bāzm u râzm' by Azis ibn Ardäshira, provide key insights into the fabricated nature of the event. The findings indicate that the supposed 'battle' served as a tool for asserting Ottoman domination and for solidifying Christian resistance against them. Furthermore, the textual evidence clarifies the complexities of Serbian political allegiance to the Ottomans in subsequent conflicts, particularly in the Battle of Nicopolis. The study concludes by challenging the established historical narrative, emphasizing the role of myth-making in shaping collective memory related to this incident.
