Abstract

Language:

Titanium is the ninth most abundant element and the fourth most common construction metal in the earth’s crust, yet its global production remains limited due to high production costs. This study aims to explore the electrowinning of molten titanium as a potential cost-effective alternative akin to aluminium electrowinning, a concept that has not yet succeeded commercially since the Kroll process was introduced in 1946. The methodology involved experimental testing of this electrowinning route to produce pure titanium. However, the authors encountered failures in achieving the desired results, which prompted a deeper comparison of the fundamental differences and analogies between the electrolysis processes of aluminium and titanium. This analysis revealed significant obstacles that must be surmounted to realize an effective electrowinning process for titanium. The findings indicate that, despite the attractive nature of this approach, substantial technological advancements are necessary to reduce production costs and expand the market for titanium. Overall, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on innovative methods to enhance titanium's affordability and accessibility in various industries.
