Maintenance is a critical activity across sectors for sustaining asset performance over its intended service life; neglecting it may result in catastrophic accidents, substantial loss of life, or asset damage. Maintenance is the process of restoring a physical or intangible asset to its original condition to ensure it fulfils its essential function throughout its life cycle. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on maintenance technique strategies and maintenance management classifications, and to suggest a suitable maintenance strategy applicable to any particular asset or specific industry. The paper systematically categorizes the published literature and then methodically analyzes and reviews it, highlighting a new shift in the maintenance paradigm. A total of 44 peer‑reviewed journal articles published between 2005 and 2025, across various sectors, were examined. The review categorizes the literature using a maintenance management classification tree, with a focus on selecting a suitable maintenance strategy for a particular asset or industry, or for none at all.
