Corrosion represents the degradation of materials resulting from interactions with their environments, notably affecting metals, polymers, and ceramics used in various applications. This chapter provides a comprehensive definition of corrosion, categorizing examples from common occurrences like rusting in water and the deterioration of automotive components to less-obvious instances such as reaction-induced degradation in surgical implants and structural materials. The overarching objective is to underscore the critical need for corrosion control, which is primarily driven by concerns surrounding safety and economic viability. Employing a multifaceted approach, this chapter examines different types of corrosion phenomena and the implications of material selection, manufacturing process enforcement, and product control. Results reveal that the management of corrosion is intrinsically linked to preventing personal injury and minimizing economic losses, thereby making it a vital consideration in engineering and manufacturing sectors. The discussions highlight the necessity for effective corrosion prevention strategies to ensure both safety and economic efficiency across various industries.
