In many subsurface environments, issues such as human health risks and environmental quality necessitate effective modeling strategies to predict the fate of chemical species under various conditions. This paper outlines the objectives and activities of a working group established in 2002, which comprises representatives from multiple federal agencies, aimed at evaluating the current state of conceptual models and parameterization methods for reactive transport modeling (RTM) applied to subsurface systems including soil and groundwater. The group seeks to prioritize research directions that enhance RTM's practical utility, particularly concerning the complexities of reactive solutes and the coupling of physical processes with biogeochemical reactions. Their efforts include conducting literature reviews, organizing workshops, and discussing significant knowledge gaps in characterizing subsurface variability and in-situ behaviors. The findings highlight the current limitations in the robustness of RTM predictions, emphasizing that calibration against field observations is vital for justifying decisions made based on model outcomes. The working group concludes that improvements in RTM applications could lead to better predictions in public health issues and result in significant cost savings for federal agencies.
