The use of zinc as a cementation agent for gold from ammoniacal–thiosulphate solutions has been studied. The objective of this research was to investigate the experimental variables influencing this cementation process, including pH (ranging from 9 to 10.5), thiosulphate concentration (0.05 to 0.4 M), temperature (from 5 to 50°C), and the presence of zinc and Cu(II) ions in the solution. A systematic methodology involving a series of controlled experiments was employed to assess the performance of zinc in cementing gold ions. The results revealed that the cementation process is primarily governed by diffusion control, and the study proposed a mechanism for gold cementation that integrates the observed variables. The findings highlight the feasibility of using zinc in the recovery of gold, providing insights into optimizing the leaching process utilizing lower toxicity reagents compared to traditional methods. These contributions are significant for advancing hydrometallurgical techniques for gold extraction in an environmentally sustainable manner.
