Mould powders significantly influence the stability of the continuous casting process for steel, performing essential roles in lubrication and controlling heat transfer within the mould. At Corus IJmuiden, the thin slab caster operates at casting speeds between 5.4 and 6 m/min, with a production level nearing the design target of 1.3 Mt/year, which is set to increase to 1.8 Mt/year. To facilitate this escalation, the project aimed to extend the steel in mould time to approximately 85% and enhance the maximum casting speed to 8 m/min. A collaborative initiative was undertaken between Sumitomo Metal Industries and Corus IJmuiden to develop mould powders capable of supporting these higher casting speeds. The project delved into the design, characterization of powders, and real-world trials on various casters. Utilizing advanced technology, including high-temperature X-ray diffraction and multiple microscopic techniques, we examined the properties and phase relations of granulated mould powders under elevated temperatures. The mould powders developed exhibit mild cooling properties that help regulate heat transfer during the casting process, ensuring stability and efficiency in the continuous casting of steel.
