Gold leaching in thiosulphate media has attracted renewed interest due to fast kinetics in the presence of oxidants and adaptability to unsuitable gold ores for direct cyanidation. This review aims to explore the effect of various reagents on the gold leaching process, focusing on the acidity, concentrations of copper(II), ammonia, thiosulphate, and polythionates, as well as the influences of chloride, carbonate, sulphite, sulphide, and other cations like silver(I) and lead(II). The literature is systematically reviewed to assess both beneficial and detrimental effects of background reagents on gold dissolution from different substrates. Mechanistic insights and interactions related to Lewis acid-base properties and soft-hard characteristics of ions are discussed, underpinning how these interactions enhance gold recovery by facilitating copper(II) to form stronger ligands with gold and mitigating passivation layers that impede gold dissolution. Ultimately, the findings highlight the complex relationships between chemical properties and gold extraction performance, providing a comprehensive understanding necessary for optimizing leaching systems.
