This study aims to identify the most effective monolithic refractory materials that can withstand corrosion and slag penetration in anode, rod, and tube mills. Building upon research initially presented at the 2015 Interwire Conference, the scope of this investigation has expanded to include the evaluation of colloidal silica bonded and cement bonded castables. Key findings indicate that the slag properties of anode, rod, and tube mills vary significantly, which implies that refractory manufacturers must meticulously assess the specific slag characteristics of each operation to optimize refractory selection. Additionally, the study explores the historical context of shaft furnaces, noting the shift from traditional nitride bonded SiC brick linings to the increasing adoption of monolithic linings in both furnaces and downstream processing equipment. Despite the enhanced performance offered by brick linings, challenges such as skilled labor shortages and escalating costs have driven the industry to consider monolithic solutions. Consequently, this research will provide valuable insights into the essential properties necessary for selecting the most suitable refractory materials that enhance operational efficiency in copper production.
