Abstract

Language:

This study compares the electrochemical characteristics of titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated with ruthenium oxide (RuO2) and iridium oxide (IrO2) anodes that were prepared through the sol–gel procedure. The oxide sols were derived from force hydrolysis of corresponding metal chlorides. Using voltammetric analysis in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solution, it was found that the TiO2/RuO2/Ti anode exhibited stronger pseudocapacitive properties attributed to proton-assisted surface redox transitions. In contrast, the TiO2/IrO2/Ti anode displayed enhanced electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution, although both types of anodes showed similar activity for chlorine evolution. Impedance analyses revealed that the TiO2/RuO2/Ti electrode behaved like a capacitor over a larger potential range compared to the TiO2/IrO2/Ti electrode, which transitioned from resistor-like to capacitor-like characteristics with increasing potential. These findings suggest distinct electrochemical behaviors of the two anodes, indicating potential applications and limitations in electrochemical processes.
