Abstract

Language:

Power factor (PF) plays a crucial role in electrical power systems, offering significant technical and financial advantages during power transfer. This paper addresses the issue of low PF, a common problem due to irregular load expansion, by presenting a novel technique for selecting appropriate capacitor sizes to mitigate PF penalties imposed by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The case study focuses on the Quid-e-Azam Medical College in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, where low PF leads to excessive losses and system overloads. The proposed method is validated using the ETAP simulation software, demonstrating its effectiveness in resolving practical issues associated with low PF. Furthermore, the paper includes an economic analysis of capacitor installation, detailing the associated costs and the payback period. This comprehensive approach not only enhances power system efficiency but also provides a financially viable solution for power factor improvement in similar settings.
