The metrological principles of neutron activation analysis (NAA) are discussed, highlighting its capability to provide elemental amounts of substance that are fully traceable to the International System of Units (SI). This method has been employed by various laboratories across the globe in several key comparisons organized by the Consultative Committee for Units of Measurement (CCQM), which are interlaboratory comparison tests conducted at the highest metrological standards. The results obtained through NAA are reported to be equivalent to those from alternative methods for elemental or isotopic analysis in complex samples, notably without necessitating the chemical destruction or dissolution of the samples. In April 2007, the CCQM accepted the assertion that neutron activation analysis should be regarded with equivalent status to the methods that were previously recognized as 'primary methods of measurement'. This study elaborates on the analytical characteristics and potential applications of NAA, underscoring its significance in enhancing measurement accuracy in metrology.
