The leaching of gold in ferric-thiourea-thiocyanate solutions has been studied using the rotating-disk technique to evaluate the effects of initial concentrations of ferric, thiourea (Tu), thiocyanate, temperature, and pH on gold leaching rate. The findings reveal that the gold leaching rate in the mixed ligand solution significantly exceeds that of either lixiviant used alone or the sum of their individual effects. Notably, the process exhibits a dual control mechanism involving both chemical reaction and diffusion processes within the mixed lixiviant system, as evidenced by determinations of apparent activation energy. In particular, the presence of thiourea contributes to the considerable stability of thiocyanate towards oxidation, thus enhancing the overall leaching efficiency. These findings suggest that the ferric-thiourea-thiocyanate system may offer a viable alternative to traditional cyanidation processes for gold extraction, particularly under specific pH conditions conducive to the use of ferric sulfate as an effective oxidizing agent.
