Abstract

Language:

A Humidification-Dehumidification (HD) system combined with a Vapor Compression Refrigeration (VCR) system is a futuristic approach to enhance the COP of a cold storage and to produce desalinated water. A research lacuna exists in the amalgamation of a HD system with a cold room using the heat from evaporator and compressor simultaneously with the aid of heat exchangers and utilising it for desalination. A heat exchanger between compressor and condenser acts as a pre-cooler and between the evaporator and the compressor acts as a dehumidifier. Flow rates of air and water range from 1.59 to 5.22 kg/min and 8.7 to 23.14 kg/min, respectively. At 200 W refrigeration load with 25 mm thick packing material, improved COP of 3.25, GOR of 0.7672 and minimal energy consumption of 0.46 kWh is obtained with 550 ml of water. The revamped system saves ₹ 387 ($4.25)/month and has curbed emissions of 51.98 kg of CO2 equivalents/year when compared with conventional one, with a payback period of 1.45 years.
