2016ensolar energyconcentrated solar powerthermal storageenergy efficiency

Abstract

Language:

There is an ever increasing demand for clean, efficient, and predictable energy production. This can be achieved using free, abundantly available solar energy. Such a specification can be accomplished with a parabolic trough Concentrated Solar Power plant in conjunction with a thermal storage system, which allows for energy storage over medium-to-long periods of time with minimal energy losses to surroundings. Such a plant uses the energy produced by the Sun to heat up a working fluid by means of concentrating solar radiation. This energy can then either be turned into electricity directly, by means of a steam turbine cycle, or stored in a thermal storage system for periods of off-peak sun radiation and sub-optimal weather conditions. This particular plant design makes use of molten salts due them being best suited for the predicted temperature range in the process. The presented design was substantiated with financial modelling of the building and operation of the plant, as well as a literature review into the subject area to determine the best choice for components considering the specification.
