Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the efficiency of different resin types for the extraction of uranyl ions from aqueous solutions. The objective was to compare the performance of a newly developed phosphonic complexing moiety linked to polyethyleneimine and polystyrene divinyl-benzene against the commercial resin Lewatit TP 260 in the sorption of uranyl ions. A batch experimental setup was employed to optimize critical parameters, including pH, contact time, initial uranyl concentration, ionic strength, and temperature. The results indicated that polyethyleniminephenylphosphonamidic acid exhibited superior exchange capability for uranyl ions at a low pH of approximately 1.5, while the diaminotriphosphonic acid grafted resin was more effective at a slightly higher pH of around 3.5. The sorption capacities determined for UO2²⁺ ions were observed to be 39.66, 41.76, and 58.33 mg/g for the respective resins. The adsorption behavior of the diaminotriphosphonic acid resin conformed to the Freundlich isotherm, while the Lewatit TP 260 resin showed adherence to the Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous at elevated temperatures.
