Comminution, the size reduction of rock particles during various mining and mineral processing stages, has been identified as a significant energy consumer globally, particularly during crushing and milling. This editorial introduces a Special Issue dedicated to the optimisation of comminution circuits, highlighting critical research efforts aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness of comminution equipment. The Special Issue encompasses studies that focus on mathematical modelling of crushers and mills, energy reduction strategies, and optimisation practices across diverse techniques including ore blending and kinetic modelling of tower mills. Notably, contributions derive from a wide range of international authors with extensive experience in mineral processing, bringing valuable insights into compressor optimisation and the use of the attainable region technique for improving ball mill operations. The collected works collectively address the pressing need for innovations in comminution methods and aim to reduce energy expenses linked to mining operations. This editorial underscores the collaborative efforts of researchers from multiple countries, reinforcing the global importance of effective comminution practices in the mining industry.
