Abstract

Language:

The instantaneous reactive power theory was published 25 years ago and has been widely used in nonlinear load compensation with active power filters. This theory allows for the attainment of constant source power after compensation in a straightforward manner. However, research has identified certain limitations, particularly in scenarios where the source voltage is unbalanced or nonsinusoidal, resulting in a source current that fails to meet the desired balanced and sinusoidal criteria. This paper introduces an alternative compensation strategy in phase coordinates that simplifies the process without requiring complex mathematical transformations, thereby facilitating modifications for achieving different compensation objectives. The proposed modifications yield strategies aimed at achieving a unity power factor and ensuring balanced and sinusoidal source current. Practical applications of these compensation strategies to a power system are evaluated, with results demonstrating their effectiveness in improving power quality after compensation.
