This research focuses on the optimization of tuyere arrangements in SKS bottom blown copper smelting furnaces, reflecting the growing interest in enhancing furnace operation efficiency over the past decade. The objective is to propose new tuyere arrangements and to evaluate their performance through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. We utilized a previously validated numerical model to conduct CFD tests that assessed velocity distribution and wall shear stress in scaled-down models of the SKS furnace, applying a constant total volumetric gas flow rate across various operational parameters and geometries. The results demonstrate that the new tuyere arrangements result in improved performance in elliptical furnaces, especially at higher gas injection speeds, while also maintaining acceptable wall shear stress in round furnaces. In contrast, at lower gas injection speeds, the suggested tuyere configurations did not significantly enhance agitation in the round furnaces but showed benefits in elliptical configurations. The interaction between bubble plumes and the furnace sidewalls was identified as a key factor in the observed agitation enhancement. Additionally, a simulation of a full-scale furnace model was conducted to optimize the tuyere angle, further amplifying the advantages of the innovative tuyere arrangements.
