This paper reviews case histories and proposed mechanisms for microbiologically influenced corrosion of metals and alloys by metal depositing microorganisms. It distinguishes mechanisms involving indirect participation of these microorganisms, typically iron- and manganese oxidizing species, from those focusing specifically on the electrochemical properties of deposits containing manganese oxides and hydroxides in higher oxidation states. The evaluation considers the potential influence of microbiologically formed deposits based on electrochemical corrosion principles and Mn oxidation states. Following a brief overview of microbiological Mn-oxidation, the paper presents experimental evidence supporting predicted corrosion by such deposits, proposing a model for microbiologically influenced corrosion in stainless steel due to manganese oxidizing microorganisms. The discussion includes possible consequences of this model and practical implications of the corrosion phenomenon. Overall, the work aims to bridge theoretical concepts with practical observations to enhance understanding and management of this significant issue in materials technology.
