Future availability of mineral resources is influenced by opposing trends: the long-term decline in ore grades, which heightens energy consumption in the mining industry, versus technological advancements that may prevent such increases. This paper aims to investigate whether technological breakthroughs can mitigate the rising energy demands of gold mining. Utilizing the learning curve approach, the study examines data sets from 17 major gold-producing countries to quantify improvements in material and energy efficiency influenced by experience and technological change. Results indicate that technological learning is intrinsically linked to ore grade as well as mining operations and recovery processes, yielding average progress ratios that vary significantly from +20% to -22%. This research enhances our understanding of the mining sector by elucidating the interplay between technological evolution and declining ore grades and identifies optimal mining practices worldwide.
