Data were obtained during a two-year field and laboratory corrosion study that implicated brass valves and fittings as a potential source of lead, copper, and zinc in drinking water, particularly in standing water. Contamination from this source was found to be a significant cause of metal concentrations that exceeded maximum contaminant levels. These findings should be considered in the design of water sampling programs, the selection of plumbing materials for household use, and the planning of corrosion-rate measurement and plumbing material solubility experiments. The study evaluated the relationships between water quality, the corrosion of galvanized-steel and copper plumbing, and the metal concentrations found in water samples from typical household systems. The data indicated that the corrosion of brass fittings contributed significantly to metal concentration complications, thus affecting water quality and safety measures in residential settings.
