Abstract

Language:

This report explores the bench scale and pilot plant tests conducted between 1973 and 1978 for manufacturing TiCl4 by chlorinating ilmenite directly. The primary objective is to provide an economical method for producing TiCl4, a crucial intermediate for metallic titanium and titanium oxide. The methodology involves supplying Cl2 gas into a fluidized bed at temperatures ranging from 900°C to 1,000°C, effectively converting ilmenite into chlorides. The innovative cooling system described in the report enables the separation and collection of TiCl4 from other high-boiling chlorides, achieving a discharge of less than 1% TiCl4 with the iron chlorides. Furthermore, the recovery of Cl2 from iron chlorides is accomplished by oxidizing them with oxygen in a fluidized bed at 650°C to 700°C, achieving a recovery rate of at least 99%. The findings highlight the advantages of this process for larger production units while indicating limitations for smaller apparatus. The refined TiCl4 is positioned as a key raw material for the production of metallic titanium and titanium oxide.
